Cuban Missile Crisis

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a time in 1962 when Cuba was armed by the Soviets with Nuclear weapons that were within firing range of America. On October 15, 1962 America discovered the missiles that were placed in Cuba. The plan was devised by Premier Nikita Khrushchev to place the missiles in Cuba. Cuban leader Fidel Castro allowed for the placing of the missiles in his country because of the fear of invasion by Americans. American President Kennedy started to send people to Cuba to learn more about the missiles. Kennedy and Khrushchev threw many negations decided that if the missiles were removed from Cuba then America would not invade them. This ended the Crisis

NATO and The Warsaw Pact

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was an alliance formed by America and several European countries in April 4, 1949. Communism was spreading like peanut butter on bread and NATO's goal was to stop it. If NATO was a virus to fight communism then the Warsaw Pact was the communist anti-virus. The Warsaw Pact formed in 1955 was formed to increase the spread of communism in Europe. As Communism declined both NATO and the Warsaw Pact dissipated.

Film Lesson: "Schindler's List"

The movie Schindler's List illustrates the Holocaust for what it was, a senseless evacuation and genocide of the Jewish people by the hands of madmen. The movie shows how the Jewish people were effected by the holocaust in a real way so we can almost feel how they felt during the time. It shows the Jews confusion, anger, disbelive, sadness, and fear. It shows how amoral the Nazi could be. I think the most powerful scence in that movie was when the German solders entered a house and shot floor boards and wardrobes to kill any Jews hiding within them.

US Atomic Bombing of Japan in 1945

I think that the Atomic Bomb was the biggest news story of the century. If you really think about it nothing else comes close to the bombs in this century. I don't even think the World Wars are as importaint other than the fact that they lead too the usage of the bomb. The bomb was not only a weapon that killed millions but also a monument of how far technology was going. The bomb offical made America a world Super Power and showed that America was a force to be reckoned with. While looking at the list of top headlines I saw that a few thinks were out of place. I really don't think that women getting to be able to vote is importaint enough to be in the top 5 headlines. Don' t get me wrong it was an importaint step in the right direction but there were much more importaint events that happened.

Film Lesson: "Night and Fog"

I thought that Night and Fog was a good documentary that explains what happen to the Jews. It holds nothing back about what happened to the Jews including their deaths, and corpses. Night and Fog shows pictures of the naked Jews before being sent into the incinerators. Everything is shown nothing is censored. The scene that sticks out the most to me is when they show a row of decapitated bodies with the heads neatly placed in a basket. In Schindler’s List scenes were violent but more of a Hollywood violence that show people being shot but it was nothing like real corpses in Night and Fog. Schindler’s List show a different aspects of the Holocaust. Schindlers' List shows the holocaust from more of the peoples point of view of following the Jews around from place to place giving the viewer in sight on the Jews feeling and such. Night and Fog on the other hand shows everything for what it was. Night and Fog doesn't follow anyone family or person to create a story it just presents the facts of what happened at these horrible places. I don't think that one of these films was more effective than another I think that they both illustrate thinks that people need to know and hear.

The Treaty of Versailles Ended WW I

The Treaty of Versailles marked the end of World War I. It was the when Germany and the countries allied with her accepted defeat and the terms of the defeat. Germany was to take full responsibility for causing World War One and was to provide compensation to Great Britain, France, and America for all of damaged cause. All of Germanys overseas colonies and some over there home lands were taken away.
After losing large amounts of land and money Germany became very poor. This took Germany into very bad times. The Germans became bitter about losing the war and being blamed for the entire war. This led fascist leader Adolph Hitler to come into power and cause World War II

Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) and the Modernization of Turkey

Mustafa Kemal made Turkey more modernized and secular. To bring his people closer the modernization of the other European countries he scarified his country’s religion. He told his people that their religious ways of dress were uncivil. Tried to make is people less religious or secular.
He told his people to change the way they dressed. He abolished the wearing of the fez. The fez was a hat that the people wore as part of there religion. He told them to wear hats that were more like the western hats of Europe and the Americas. He was disgusted that the Turkish culture was not their own but more of a mixture of several different cultures.

Film Lesson: "Gandhi"

Gandhi helped his country gain independence from the British with a series of protest. These protest slowly loosened the grip Britain power over the Indian people. Gandhi and his followers would not stop until all of India was free or until they were all dead.
First Gandhi joined the Indian people who had been segregated by religion. He held public speeches telling the Indian people that they had to join forces to conquer the British control. Once Gandhi had the full support of all of India he started to lead them into a rebellion against the British. Gandhi’s rebellion was a new type of rebellion that he dubbed “Civil Disobedience”. His way of rebellion was through nonviolent protest and demonstrations. Gandhi taught his followers never to harm the British even when the British would harm them. Soon because of his nonviolent protest we won not only the support of the Indian people but also the support of people around the world. Some major defiance of the British control was the salt march and the refusal to by British cloth. Although Gandhi did bring India to freedom he is not the sole reason for it. India was ripe for rebellion already. The Indian people were already ready to rebel all they needed was a strong leader.
